Guest Blog: BEF site visit to the Verde River

I recently had the amazing opportunity to visit a few of the water restoration projects that WhiteWave funds through the  Bonneville Environmental Foundation (BEF) in the Verde River region near Sedona, Ariz. I was quickly reminded why I joined this earth-loving company. Alongside other water-loving advocates, we experienced a glimpse of how water rights can affect wildlife, farming, and recreation. The most impactful site visit for me was West Clear Creek in Yavapai County. Our short hike to the widest part of the stream was so memorable. A few of us saw a small fish in the stream, which was somewhat surprising to our host at BEF. I wondered how many fish would be in this pond if the stream hadn’t been diverted to get the water to the person who owned the rights.BEF site visit

A strange concept, the person who first owned land in the area essentially owns the rights to the water surrounding that land. Streams and dams are put in place to direct and divert water to the farm land or the housing community. Water rights outnumber the amount of available surface water. If you need to direct water to your community, you can buy water rights.

While on this site visit I was happy to hear that BEF uses some of their funding to educate and help farmers with drip irrigation systems. This system is simple and advanced at the same time; the system is able to monitor soil moisture for each crop and the farmer can either turn on the drip system through a smart phone or it can be set automatically. The idea is to put the water that would be otherwise used inefficiently back into the local rivers. BEF works with users downstream and work their way upstream. I’ve heard of the motto, “use it or lose it”, and this is truly where that literally comes into play. Users of upstream water may not use the water rights, and at that point downstream users can use it. I like knowing that from the bottom up the course of the water can be influenced. That’s inspiring to me and even more so to work for a company that donates resources to make these programs available.

Colorado’s 2015 Most Significant Artifacts have been posted, and the Cast Iron Cooking Caldron used to make tofu by Steve Demos, founder of WhiteWave Inc., made it to the list of finalists.

Tofu-CaldronIn 1976, Steve Demos returned from studying meditation in India. His idea to produce soybean curd, a versatile and nutritious protein source, was radical for the time. Catering to health-conscious lifestyle consumers, he founded White Wave Inc., which eventually significantly contributed to Boulder’s reputation as a natural foods hub.

Demos used this large cast iron cooking caldron to make tofu in the early days of WhiteWave Inc. company. After soybeans were soaked and mashed, the milk was extracted and transferred to the caldron where a coagulating agent was mixed in to make the milk into curds. Then the tofu was pressed into blocks.  This unique object places Boulder and the history of WhiteWave in the forefront of the Nation’s natural food movement.
