Horizon® Farmer Feature: The Batdorf and Conant Families

ConantsHorizon® family farmers take pride in providing high quality dairy products. Many also work within their local communities to share best practices in organic farming, increase access to healthier foods, assist with disaster relief efforts, and empower fellow citizens to become strong and resilient leaders.

This month, we celebrate the Batdorfs and the Conants—two farming families that consistently set a high bar for themselves and the rest of Horizon’s network of nearly 700 organic dairy farming families.

The Batdorf family of McVeytown, Pa. has been shipping quality organic milk to Horizon since 2008, and just last year received the Horizon Organic Producer Education (HOPE) Award, which honors farmers that consistently advocate for organic agriculture. To improve sustainability on their 55-cow farm, they utilize a solar-powered pump to supply water to the cows and installed a 40-foot windmill to move water up the farm’s hilly terrain. Locally, the Batdorfs are actively involved with Pennsylvania Certified Organic (PCO), where Andrew serves as president of the board and helped launch PCO’s mentoring program to educate farmers about organic production. The family also assisted in establishing a farmers’ market in a nearby food desert to help bring fresh fruits and vegetables to local residents. Additionally, the Batdorfs help with disaster relief through Christian Aid Ministries and Mennonite Disaster Service (MDS).

The Conant family of Randolph Center, Vt. (pictured above) has devoted a great deal of time and energy to community engagement. Dean and Terri received an honorable mention for the 2014 HOPE Award as a result of their stellar contributions to local initiatives. The family has opened their farm to numerous tours to engage neighbors and friends by sharing their successes and challenges over the years. Dean and Terri have also served as leaders with their local 4-H for nearly two decades. The Conants continue to give back by volunteering with their local Grange as well, a nonprofit organization focused on advocating for rural America and agriculture. On top of these efforts, Dean holds membership with Vermont Farm Bureau, American Jersey Cattle Association, Vermont State Ayrshire Association (where he serves as director), and U.S. Ayrshire Breeders’ Association.

Through their ongoing commitment to giving back, these farming families are just two examples of why our farmers are the heart of Horizon.

Silk Plant-Based Milks Arrive in China

On Dec. 12, Elaine Sun, CEO of China Mengniu Dairy Co. Ltd. (Mengniu), and Gregg Engles, Chairman and CEO of WhiteWave Foods, joined Chinese media and celebrities in Shanghai to celebrate the release of their first co-branded plant-based beverage products in China: Silk ZhiPuMoFang.

The new beverages—almondmilk and walnutmilk—are the result of a joint venture (JV) entered into by WhiteWave and Mengniu in 2014. As a leading dairy product manufacturer and distributor in China, Mengniu is pleased to offer its consumers a new wave of nutritious products beyond dairy.

The co-branded products’ debut into China’s food and beverage market is indeed one worth celebrating, as the country is home to an estimated 150 million fans of plant-based foods. Products like these will also provide more nutritious choices for Chinese consumers, many of whom are curious to know more about the health benefits of plant-based food and beverages.

We are thrilled to see this exciting new venture come to fruition with the release of these new products in China.

Bringing Life to the Colorado River Delta
Colorado River

Colorado River flowing through Canyonlands National Park. Photograph by Dan Marotti.

Life flourishes when water abounds.

In a recent National Geographic story, author Sandra Postel drives home this critical message. Postel tells of “something extraordinary” she’d witnessed at the US-Mexico border in the spring of 2014: water flowing through the Colorado River Delta for the first time after many years of desiccation. She describes in detail the effects of this “pulse flow” on the surrounding landscape: dragonflies swooping in to breed and feed, carp swimming downstream to join the commotion, and an abundance of wildlife stirring gleefully at the water’s long-awaited resurgence.

The life-sustaining flow that Postel observed that day was no chance occurrence but the result of concerted efforts from US and Mexico, conservation groups, and a WhiteWave-sponsored water restoration initiative called Change the Course. Led by National Geographic, the Bonneville Environmental Foundation and Participant Media, Change the Course has already provided roughly 1 billion gallons of water to restoration areas downstream, with more sustaining base flows planned for 2015. As a Charter Sponsor for Change the Course, WhiteWave continues its commitment to improving quality of life in our community.

If you’d like to help restore much-needed water flows to the Colorado River Basin, join Change the Course by pledging to shrink your personal water footprint and be more conscious of what you eat and buy. Each and every pledge puts 1,000 gallons of water back into the Colorado River Basin.

For many, the New Year is a time to compile another list of resolutions that will hopefully improve our lives in some way — quitting smoking, eating better, exercising more, staying in touch with family and friends, and so on. Despite our best intentions, however, it can be easy to fall prey to old habits and lose the motivation that carries us through the first month or two of the year.

If your 2015 resolution list includes cooking more plant-based meals at home, enjoy these delicious recipes from our brands to help you stay on the path to success:

We wish you all the best of luck in achieving your goals throughout the year!
