It’s that time of year again, when there’s a magical hustle and bustle in the streets, and a natural cheer fills the air. For some of us, this can be a super stressful time of the year, with entertaining, holiday party-going and shopping frantically for the perfect gifts. Have you ever thought to yourself that life would be much easier if we could just enjoy ourselves and each other’s company without the whole gift thing? This year, we are focusing more on being a great company, and less on the gifts! Below are vega product specialist, Sarah Skalzub top 10 gifts you don’t have to go to the store to give:
An adventure is priceless. Take your special someone somewhere they’ve never been before, but always wanted to go. Whether it’s a hike they’ve had their eye on, the local ice skating rink, or a food truck they’ve been drooling over. Give them the gift of adventure that they’ll never forget.
Get hands on. Show your handy side and help out with a home project that a friend has wanted to get done forever and can never find the time. Help them clean out the garage, paint their bathroom, or organize their pantry. This is the type of gift they’ll be ever so grateful for.
Feed the need. Donate your time. Grab a partner that likes to give back, find a local charity that you can support and lend a hand. Help out in a soup kitchen, sort toys for a secret Santa organization or gift drive, or make up your own care packages and share them with those that need it most. Not only will you be making someone else’s holiday a lot better, it also feels good to give back.
Made with love. Make dinner for your friends or family. Do you have that person in your life, who’s always on the go and finds it hard to get home from work and make a healthy dinner? I think we all know at least one. Make a date to pop on over, let them relax and you do the cooking. They’ll probably appreciate it more than you know. If you’re in need of some ideas, look no further, check out the Vega Recipe Center for some awesome ideas.
Be childish. Be part of the babysitters’ club and offer to take care of a friend or family member’s kids while the parents go out for a night on the town. Give them a much deserved night out, while you get some bonding time in with the kids. Heck, you’ll be surprised at the high quality blanket fort you’re able to build as an adult.
Arts attack. Have a night out at the theater. Take your friend out for night to the theater, or go see a screening of your favorite movie. Get some popcorn, your favorite snacks and veg out.
Go Complimental. Think of the feeling you get when someone pays you a really nice compliment. I’m not talking about, I like your shirt today, or your hair looks nice like that. Those are nice to hear, don’t get me wrong, I’m talking about that feeling when someone close to you gives you a real heartfelt genuine compliment. Try making your gift something sentimental, take the time and write out a heartfelt card for your loved ones, with all the things you admire and love about them. And hey, who doesn’t like to read something nice about themselves.
Teacher for a day. Use something you’re good at and roll with it. Are you a wizard behind the guitar, give your friend that’s been dying to play a lesson. Really good at playing hockey, set up a friendly match with your friends that have always wanted to get in on a game, but felt intimidated at the rink.
Go old school. Make your friends a mixtape with your favorite jams. Or should I say make your friends a playlist. Find all those songs you rock out to when you’re together and share through Spotify or whatever music outlet you subscribe to.
Make your own entertainment. Make a slide show. That’s right, slide shows aren’t just for weddings. How fun is to see old photos of you and your family? I’m talking before-Facebook-old. Gather your family around for a real blast from the past and a walk down memory lane. Share a laugh at your brother’s bowl cut, or your mom’s hairdo and remember the good ol’ days.

I recently had the amazing opportunity to visit a few of the water restoration projects that WhiteWave funds through the Bonneville Environmental Foundation (BEF) in the Verde River region near Sedona, Ariz. I was quickly reminded why I joined this earth-loving company. Alongside other water-loving advocates, we experienced a glimpse of how water rights can affect wildlife, farming, and recreation. The most impactful site visit for me was West Clear Creek in Yavapai County. Our short hike to the widest part of the stream was so memorable. A few of us saw a small fish in the stream, which was somewhat surprising to our host at BEF. I wondered how many fish would be in this pond if the stream hadn’t been diverted to get the water to the person who owned the rights.
A strange concept, the person who first owned land in the area essentially owns the rights to the water surrounding that land. Streams and dams are put in place to direct and divert water to the farm land or the housing community. Water rights outnumber the amount of available surface water. If you need to direct water to your community, you can buy water rights.
While on this site visit I was happy to hear that BEF uses some of their funding to educate and help farmers with drip irrigation systems. This system is simple and advanced at the same time; the system is able to monitor soil moisture for each crop and the farmer can either turn on the drip system through a smart phone or it can be set automatically. The idea is to put the water that would be otherwise used inefficiently back into the local rivers. BEF works with users downstream and work their way upstream. I’ve heard of the motto, “use it or lose it”, and this is truly where that literally comes into play. Users of upstream water may not use the water rights, and at that point downstream users can use it. I like knowing that from the bottom up the course of the water can be influenced. That’s inspiring to me and even more so to work for a company that donates resources to make these programs available.
Colorado’s 2015 Most Significant Artifacts have been posted, and the Cast Iron Cooking Caldron used to make tofu by Steve Demos, founder of WhiteWave Inc., made it to the list of finalists.
In 1976, Steve Demos returned from studying meditation in India. His idea to produce soybean curd, a versatile and nutritious protein source, was radical for the time. Catering to health-conscious lifestyle consumers, he founded White Wave Inc., which eventually significantly contributed to Boulder’s reputation as a natural foods hub.
Demos used this large cast iron cooking caldron to make tofu in the early days of WhiteWave Inc. company. After soybeans were soaked and mashed, the milk was extracted and transferred to the caldron where a coagulating agent was mixed in to make the milk into curds. Then the tofu was pressed into blocks. This unique object places Boulder and the history of WhiteWave in the forefront of the Nation’s natural food movement.

When you think about it, snow is a key component in most holiday traditions – like sledding, caroling and
ice-skating. In short, snow adds delight. This holiday, International Delight brought a delightful dose of holiday happiness to a Floridian community that has rarely seen snow.
