WhiteWave wins Rabobank Leadership & Excellence Award

Once again, WhiteWave has been recognized as a leading producer of dairy and plant-based food and beverage products. During Rabobank North America Wholesale’s annual Client Week event in New York City earlier this month, WhiteWave received the Leadership & Excellence Award for “reducing its impact on the environment and improving responsible sourcing and sustainable packaging, while supporting America’s farmers and promoting the benefits of sustainable agriculture.” As a growing company with a clear mission, we are constantly seeking out and implementing business practices that are better for our customers, our farmers and the planet.

Numerous aspects of each company were considered in deciding this year’s winners, including “their ability to drive meaningful innovation, expand into new markets, impact industry dynamics, impact consumers, and build upon sustainability and social responsibility efforts within the last 18 months.” While many companies are making strides in these areas, WhiteWave continues to intentionally excel in all of them.

Upon receiving the award, our chairman and CEO Gregg Engles notes, “The Rabobank Award for Leadership and Excellence further motivates our quest to provide great-tasting, better-for-you foods and beverages that align with the enduring consumer trends for healthier food choices.”

WhiteWave Donates to Share-A-Gift for the Holidays

Share-A-Gift Logo

This holiday season, WhiteWave employees will make wishes come true by donating new and gently used gifts to one of Share-A-Gift’s donation boxes in the lobby of our Broomfield office. In 2013, Share-A-Gift brought joy to approximately 600 families and nearly 1,500 children in Colorado’s Boulder Valley School District with donated toys, books, games, bicycles and other gifts. By filling the donation box and spreading awareness, we hope to increase those numbers to make each holiday better than the last.

A growing number of families in the area struggle to provide gifts to their children during the holidays. If you’d like to aid the cause but don’t live near a collection site, you can also make a monetary donation to Share-A-Gift.

WhiteWave Foods aids hunger relief in Eugene, Ore.

WhiteWave Foods and So Delicious® Dairy Free share a passion for giving back to the local communities in which they operate. As part of this commitment, WhiteWave recently donated $25,000 to the Eugene, Ore.-based food bank, FOOD for Lane County (FFLC). The gift will provide roughly 75,000 meals to a diverse population of children, families, seniors and single adults currently living on limited incomes. The donation is an expression of appreciation for the So Delicious brand and its bright future as part of WhiteWave.

Based in Eugene, FFLC is dedicated to alleviating hunger and creating access to food in their local community. FFLC helped over 70,000 families in need of emergency food assistance last year by distributing a record 8 million pounds of food to Lane County residents, 41 percent of whom currently qualify for emergency food assistance.

Oregon’s hunger rate remains virtually unchanged for the last ten years and, according to Feeding America®, the state still has one of the highest rates of childhood hunger in the nation at nearly 30 percent.

WhiteWave is working hard to change the way the world eats for the better; donating to hunger relief efforts of organizations like FFLC is one way we are bringing our values to life.

Horizon® Farmer Feature: Seth Gardner and Kim Watson

Sustainability is a vital component to organic dairy farming. This month, we recognize Horizon® farmers Seth Gardner and Kim Watson for successfully taking sustainability to the next level on their organic dairy farm in East Montpelier, Vt.

Powering a 280-cow organic dairy farm is a costly endeavor, requiring nearly 11,000 kilowatts of energy every month, resulting in an annual electricity expense of roughly $30,000. Realizing solar power as a potential solution, Seth Gardner decided to purchase a 100-kilowatt commercial photovoltaic solar array from locally-owned Catamount Solar in 2012. With over 400 panels, the system is capable of producing 100 kilowatts of energy per hour in full sunlight — enough power to meet the farm’s needs nearly year-round.

Although the expansive solar array cost Gardner nearly $300,000 to construct, the system will have paid for itself in its first eight years. Another bonus: the local utility will credit the farm with any additional energy the array produces.

Cutting costs while reducing their carbon footprint with solar power was ultimately a no-brainer for the two farmers. Watson remarks, “It goes with the whole organic lifestyle.”

Gardner and Watson are excited to make their farm even more sustainable into the future, envisioning another set of solar panels for hot water and a radiant heating system, and eventually replacing their diesel tractors with a fleet that run on battery power.
